The USAFA Units - 34th Operations Group - 34 OG
The best leadership opportunities at the Academy

Our Mission
The mission of the 34th Operations Group is to provide management and oversight of USAFA Airmanship Programs involving 4,200 cadets at USAF's busiest airfield with 75,000 sorties and 350,000 events logged annually. Ensures soaring, parachuting, and powered flight course standards and objectives contribute measurably to leadership and character development of officer candidates and conducts Undergraduate Flying Training (UFT) selection process.

34 OG Units
  • 94th Flying Training Squadron
The 94th Troop Carrier Squadron was activated on 1 June 1943. The aircraft assigned to this unit were the C-47 Skytrain and the C-46 Commando which served as cargo and troop carriers for the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions. These aircraft were also towplanes for the Waco CG-4A glider. During World War II, the 94thTroop Carrier Squadron participated in many important operations, including the airborne assaults on Normandy, Southern France, Holland, and Germany.
A soaring and Aero Club were formed for cadets in 1956 while the Academy was located at Lowry AFB, CO. The Academy was forced to discontinue soaring when the sailplanes were destroyed by high winds in December 1958. The Aero Club moved to the Academy airstrip in October 1961, and the Soaring Club was reestablished the same year. Soaring became part of the Academy curriculum in December 1964.

  • 98th Flying Training Squadron
In the Spring of 1966, the programs were formalized as military activities. With Air Staff approval to teach military parachuting, the parachute Branch under the Airmanship Division was born. In 1982, parachuting became a flight under the 94th ATS. In 1994, the Parachute Flight grew too large and was designated the 98th FTS.
What started as a club training 25 students a year has grown into a premier character development program training 600 to 1200 cadets annually and field nationally recognized competition and demonstration teams.
In 1995, the latest evolution is taking place. The Parachute Flight has become a squadron, the 98th Flying Training Squadron. The basic AM-490 program, which has been using round parachutes since its conception, has entered the space with the use of modern piggy back container systems and square parachutes for both the main and reserve. Each student will be equipped with a radio so all landings will be controlled from the ground. The basic program is expanding to 1200 students per year and will be offered to an increased number of ROTC cadets.

  • 34th Ops Support Squadron
The mission of the 34th Operations Support Squadron is to conduct MAJCOM level staffing in support of all USAFA aviation operations. We also provide standardized training support for all Airmanship, Flight Screening, and aviation oriented programs directly contributing to the development of officership, leadership, and character in all USAFA cadets. The 34 OSS is dedicated to promoting the highest standards of aviation excellence through dedicated air traffic control, airfield operations, life support, airspace management, and weather support operations.

  • Weather
The Air Force Academy weather station provides weather support to the Academy that includes: operational weather support for the flying organizations, resource protection for the entire installation, and direct support to numerous cadet activities.
